5The 36-Hour Day  Jun 09, 2010
Recently my 81 year old mother fell and broke her hip/leg in 4 places. She had been suffering from dementia for 2 years but we did not know it. The trama of the fall and surgery made the Dementia profound. This book was a God send. It told us how to handle situations and how to treat the patient. Everyone involved with someone with Dementia should read this authoritative book with very specific how-to answers to tough questions.

5The 36 Hour Day  May 05, 2010
This book was so insightful. It really helped explain what is going on in the aflicted person's brain. I have a much better understaning of the disease and a lot more patience! Thank you!

5Like finding a friend when you really need one  Apr 26, 2010
A close member of my family is exhibiting increasing signs of dementia. Although I am the sole caretaker, I have no experience in how to cope with such an illness and no one to instruct me. A friend highly recommended this book The 36-hour Day - Completely Revised and Updated --2008 publication.

I ordered it from Amazon.com immediately. What a find! In plain language the authors explain what is happening and why. This book has shown me ways to cope, ways to avoid burnout and ways to empathize with what the sufferer is going through. I now am able to relax and to plan how to put the patient at ease, which in turn helps to reduce the pressure on me.

5Excellent, well-written book  Apr 10, 2010
This is a must-read for those dealing with a dementia patient in the family. It has loads of good information and is written in a precise, understandable manner.

5A must for all care providers! P. Kay G. R.N.  Mar 24, 2010
I have been a practicing R.N. for 27 years in the field of geriatric psychiatry. This book has been required reading for my employees and the book I have recommended most often to care providers. Not just caregivers but care providers, those who are responsible for the provision of care. It is in it's 4th edition and I'm hoping for a 5th soon. My one bit of advice is to look at the table of contents and read the chapters as the situations arise. To open it up and read it from cover to cover can be a little overwhelming. Not everyone faces every issue. Also, please make sure that your loved one is correctly diagnosed, make an appointment with a physician who is board certified in geropsychiatry. Please do not take the word of a primary care provider, they can be sincere but wrong. You can't take that chance. Depression can mimic Alzheimer's and if it is not treated and cured the dementia can become permanent. Many dementias are not familial or inherited, don't let your family worry about getting a disease that your loved one may not even have. Contact the Memory and Aging Project for excellent information or your local Alzheimer's and other Associated Dementias Association's office. If you are considering the purchase of this book you are a good person because you care about someone very special and are doing something about it. If the money is an issue, go to your public library. My best to you and yours.
